When catering an event, Bennett's Barbeque charges a flat $200 setup fee plus $14 per person.

The cost of the annual picnic for Gambles Construction must be under their $3000 budget.

Write an inequality that determines the total number of people, "x," that can attend the picnic.

If needed, use > for "greater than"

If needed, use < for "less than"

Explanation:

so, to translate the first 2 paragraphs into math notation :

200 + 14×x < 3000

that transforms then to

14x < 2800

and then

x < 2800/14 = 200

so, x < 200

the number of attending people must be under 200.

therefore up to 199 people can attend.

FYI : the request was that the costs must be under the $3000 budget. therefore, we used "<".

if we were allowed to actually reach (and empty) the full budget, then we would have used "<=" (less than our equal), and 200 people could attend.
