-5(-x-1) + 4x -1 = 49
5x+5 + 4x -1 = 49
9x + 4 = 49 subtract 4 from both sides
9x = 45
x = 5
Plug in 5 for x
-5(-5-1) + 4(5) -1 = 49
-5(-6) + -20-1 = 49
30 + 19 = 49
49=49
So x = 5
