∠ 2 and ∠ 3 are a linear pair and sum to 180°

∠ 2 + ∠ 3 = 180 , that is

9x + 7 + 5x + 5 = 180

14x + 12 = 180 ( subtract 12 from both sides )

14x = 168 ( divide both sides by 14 )

x = 12

Then

∠ 3 = 5x + 5 = 5(12) + 5 = 60 + 5 = 65°

∠ 3 and ∠ 1 are vertically opposite angles and are congruent , so

∠ 1 = 65°
