Why did the Aztecs not sacrifice the Spanish when they first encountered them?

There are two ways to answer this question

1) The Aztecs thought that Hernando Cortes the leader of the conquistadors was their god Quetzalcoatl who left and gone east promising to come back.

2) The Aztecs enamored by the Spaniards clearly more advanced and sophisticated technologies wish to get to know them better in hopes to learn from them.
