Can someone explain? I don’t understand how they’re getting their answers.

You would distribute the 5 and the 2 ending with 5x - 5y + 2x + 2y and then you add or subtract and you end up with 7x - 3y

Parenthesis first, but you can't add two different variables so now we move on to sstep two,

Now Multiply (The dot is equal to multiplication.)

5 * (x-y) = 5x - 5y

2 * (x+y) = 2x + 2y.

Now we have 5x-5y+2x+2y.

Add the variables.

5x + 2x = 7x.

-5y +2y = -3y.

Simply plug them back in.

7x - 3y
