1. you use distributive property
3x+12-1=7
2.combine like terms
3x+11=7
3. isolate variable (subtract 11 from both sides)
3x=-4
4. cancel out variable by dividing both sides by 3
3x/3=x -4/3=-1.333…
x=-about 1.333

x = - 4/3
Explanation:
3(x + 4) - 1 = 7
3x + 12 - 1 = 7
3x + 12 = 8
3x = -4
x = -4/3
