The population of the Native American tribes decreased automatically due to disease. This was not the only reason, however. The population also decreased due to European colonization and contact with them in general (lots of times, Europeans would kill/murder Indigenous peoples).

While epidemic disease was a leading factor of the population decline of the American indigenous peoples after 1492, there were other contributing factors, all of them related to European contact and colonization. One of these factors was warfare.
