The old man’s “pale blue eye, with a film over it” is called a cataract. What this means is that the old man has a medical condition that makes his one eye look gray and different from his other, healthy eye. Simply put, the old man’s one eye just looks a little different than a healthy eye. The cataract doesn’t make the old man evil or bad in any way. Yet, the narrator admits wanting to kill the old man because looking at the eye bothered him to the point of extreme anger. We can agree that another person’s small difference in appearance is no reason to choose to kill that person. It makes no sense. Therefore, the question becomes what message do you think Poe is trying to say to the reader about bullying and prejudice? I know this is a hard question. Just do your best.
