The average rate of change of
f over an interval
[a,b] is the difference quotient


(f(b) - f(a))/(b - a)

Over the interval
3\le x\le5, we have


(f(5) - f(3))/(5 - 3) = (27 - 3)/(5 - 3) = \frac{24}2 = \boxed{12}
