3x + 2 = 38

Subtract 2 from both sides:

3x + 2 - 2 = 38 - 2

3x = 36

Divide both sides by 3 to solve for x:

$\displaystyle\mathsf{(3x)/(3)\:=\:(36)/(3)}$

x = 12

Therefore, the value of x = 12.
