a_(n) = a₁ + (n - 1)d

where a₁ is the first term and d the common difference

given a₁ = 104 and a₃ = 99 , then

104 + 2d = 99 ( subtract 104 from both sides )

2d = - 5 ( divide both sides by 2 )

d = - 2.5

then

a₂ = 104 - 2.5 = 101.5
