Sadie and Connor both play soccer. Sadie scored 3 times as many goals as Connor. Together they scored 12 goals. Create and solve an algebraic equation to determine if it is possible for Connor to have scored 4 goals.

Let the number of goals Connor scored = x

Sadies scored 3 times as many so you multiply x by 3 to get 3x

Together they scored 12 so now add x and 3x together to equal 13:

X + 3x = 13

Simplify:

3x + x = 4x

4x = 12

Divide both sides by 4:

X = 3

Connor = x = 3

Sadie = 3x = 3(3) = 9

Connor did not score 4 goals.
