The raven was at first something the narrator feared, and it is implied that he has lost his lover in death and has not been coping well. He calls out for his lover over and over again. But when he actually sees the raven he’s calmed and soothed back down. He tries to ask questions but the bird only responds with “Nevermore,” he starts to become frustrated with the bird again and begs for answers. He begs to know why the Raven was sent, if this was god punishing him, he begs to know if the bird is the devil come to taunt him. Until eventually the narrator realizes the Raven symbolizes death and he sees his shadow laying on the floor, implying he’s finally seen his own corpse from his ‘nap’
