an obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees. when all the angles in a triangle add up it must equal 180 degrees, so if one angle is already above 90 degrees the other two angles can not be higher than 90 degrees and still equal 180.

ex: 180 - 91 = 89; so the other two angles sum has to be equal to 89 which is already less that 90.
