Let me explain. First, you only add or subtract the numbers that have the same variable. So 5y - 2y = 3y. It wouldnt be 5y + 3y because its always the sign that comes after the second number. So it would be 3y. And, 3x + x = 4x. Because x by its self counts as 1. But you would still have to add a x after the sum. If it doesn't make sense, don't worry. You'll learn farther on.
