Explanation:

First of all, when coming over to an equation with a division or multiplication sign, we first solve the division or multiplication first, then the subtraction or addition. So, 12 ÷ 6 = 2. Then, 42 - 2 = 40. And in the other one we must first solve what's in the parenthesis. So, 6 - 3 = 3. Then, we multiply, 3 x 4 = 12. Then subtract. 12 - 7 = 5.
