the author is using more direct statements to define and characterize James as in they state that James is cold that he has given up his sweater and that his sweater is specifically a hooded sweater. you can see the author is more direct about James and gives more specific details about him whereas the female character there is almost no info about her other than she has taken James sweater and that she is cold. so when you are looking at direct and indirect characterization direct would be more specific blunt and obvious details and indirect would be less detail less specific details and all in all direct is more info about the character and indirect is less info about the character.
