I tried solving it, and got 3,-1. What did I do wrong? And what's the correct answer? (please explain this in very detailed steps, because I really don't understand)

The way I solved it:
2=|x| -1. -2=|x|-1
+1. +1. +1. +1
3=|x|. -1=|x|
so my answers were x= 3 and x= -1.
Brainy said that the answer is actually x=3, and x= -3, but I don't understand how, could you please help me with this?

Answer: x= 3, -3

Explanation:

simplify both sides of the equation, the isolate the variable. in other words add one to both sides to get x by itself, then you'll have 3=|x|, meaning x=3,-3. hope this helps :)
