-7x - 5 = -40
+5 +5

7x = -35
-7x/-7 = -35/-7
x= 5

The reason it’s like this is because it’s a 2 step equation to solve for x. First, you get rid of the number next to the variable, which would be -5, and you do the opposite operation to single out the variable. Since you got rid of the -5 by doing +5, you also have to add 5 to the -40 on the other side of the equation. You end up with -7x = -35, and again, you have to single out the variable. You divide the variable by -7 to single it out, and you also divide the -35 because you have to do it to both sides. Then, you end up with the answer.

For the second equation, all you have to do is combine like terms. (Note, i will be using this ^ to say an exponent.)
18s^4 - 6s^2 - 3s + 27

So, combing like terms means you combine the numbers that have the same variable and exponent. Since there is a 12s^4 and also a 6s^4, you add them together and get 18s^4. There is no like terms for -6s^2, so it stays the same. For 4s, there is also a -7s, so you combine them and get -3s. And finally, there is no terms to combine with the 27, so it stays the same.

Hope this helps

Answer:

11:

First I like to start with the largest exponents which are

12s^(4) -6s^(4)=18s^(4)

-6s^(2) stays the same because there are no other terms with the same exponent

4x-7s=-3s

27 also has no like terms

You then put it all together:
18s^(4)-6x^(2)-3s+27

5:

First, isolate the term with the exponent

-7x-5=-40

+5 +5

-7x=-35

Divide by the coefficient

-7x=-35/-7

x=5

Hope this helps!!!
