marion has a piece of fabric that is 10 yd long. she wants to cut it into 2 pieces so that one piece is 4 times as long as the other. find the lengths of the two pieces.

so, piece1/piece2 = 4/1

that means we need to imagine to have 4 + 1 = 5 pieces of the fabric.

the fabric is 10 yd long, so each of these imaginary pieces is 10/5 = 2 yd long.

so, the first actual piece is 4 of these imaginary pieces

4×2 = 8 yd

and the second actual piece is the rest (1 imaginary piece)

1×2 = 2 yd
