Well, i definitely wont do your whole essay FOR you, but i will give you some general ideas that you can expand on:
one positive thing was that the african americans that resided in the south were given rights, freedoms and opportunities that they were barred from before. one negative thing is that the other southerners (ie people who werent slaves and such) absolutely resented the new rules suddenly thrust upon them, resulting in protests that were sometimes rather violent and an effort to try and regain the slaves that some of the southerners had lost. after all, it was the slaves that were a major factor in keeping the southern economy up and running, or at least thats how it was during that time. these new rules also conflicted with other ideals and morals that the southerners held to use as an excuse for slavery but you get what im saying :)
