Brian has earned $65\%$, $80\%$ and $92\%$ on his three pre-final exams. These exams are not weighed equally: the lowest counts for only $20\%$ of his overall grade, while the other two count for $25\%$ each. If the final exam is the remainder of the overall grade and there are no opportunities for extra credit, what is the highest grade Brian can earn in the class? Express your answer to the nearest whole percent.

Answer:

86% is the highest grade Brian can earn.

Explanation:

We will multiply the weight of each grade (a decimal) times the grade. The total of all the weights should be 100. The highest possible score on the final exam is 100%. The first three tests were a total of 70% of his grade, so the final exam is worth 30% of his grade.

65(.20)+80(.25)+92(.25)+100(.30)

= 13 + 20 + 23 + 30

=86

If Brian can get a 100% on the final, then he can get an 86% in the class.

Brian has earned $65\%$, $80\%$ and $92\%$ on his three pre-final exams. These exams-example-1
