Fatima was driving home from work. She was 3/7 of the way home when she

was pulled over for speeding. Not wanting to get another ticket, she then drove
under the speed limit for half the remaining distance but had to stop again when
she got a flat tire. Giving up on driving, she walked the remaining 4 miles home.
How far away from work does Fatima live?

Answer:

14 miles.

Explanation:

She is 3/7 of the way there meaning she still has 4/7 of the way left. She then drove half of the way making her be 5/7 of the way and have 2/7 of the way left. We know that the 2/7 of the way home is 4 miles. The ratio for this is:

2/7 : 4m

Divide both sides by two.

1/7 : 2m

Multiply both sides by seven.

7/7 : 14m
