Melissa eats oatmeal for breakfast every day. She checked her pantry this morning, and

realized that she had only 2/3 of a cup of instant oatmeal and 1/6 of a cup of old-fashioned
oatmeal. How much oatmeal did Melissa have in her pantry?

In order to add these fractions together we must give them a common denominator. In this case, our common denominator can be 6 since 6 is a multiple of 3.

2/3 = 4/6
Since we are multiplying 3 by 2 to get 6, we will multiply 2 by 2 also.

4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6

Melissa has 5/6 oatmeal left
