Using a ratio is the easiest method to solve this. So below shows that he hikes 3/4 miles in 2/3 of an hour. The opposite side shows he would hike X miles in 1 hour time.

3/4 miles X miles

------------- = --------------- when you cross multiply, you get this

2/3 hour 1 hour

2/3 X = 3/4 so now start to simplify the results

multiply both sides of the equation by 3 to get rid of the 3 in the denominator on the left side. Then divide both sides by 2 to get rid of the 2 in the numerator and you'll be left with just X.

multiplying by 3 leaves 2x = (3)(3) / 4 or 2x = 9/4

dividing by 2 leaves you with x = 9 / (4)(2) or x = 9/8

9/8 is the same as 1 and 1/8
