Hello there! Given the initial value of 5 gallons and the denominator of 8, we can convert 5 to an improper fraction to start off:

8/8 • 5 = 40/8

Now we can convert 2 3/8 to an improper fraction:

(8 • 2) + 3 = 19/8

Now that we have improper fractions, we can subtract.

40/8 - 19/8 = 21/8

Now we can convert back to a mixed number:

8 • 2 = 16

16 + 5 = 21

Our fraction conversion would be 2 5/8.

Michael has 2 5/8 gallons of water left in the pitcher after pouring out 2 3/8 gallons. Hope this helps!
