Line 1: y=-x-3

Line 2: y= -1/2x-2

Is there a solution to this? I feel like there is, but I'm not good at math, so can someone confirm?

Answer is Yes there is a solution
(-2, -1)

Step by step

Substitute the line 2 y value in place of y in line 1.

-1/2x -2 = -x -3
We want to isolate x
First we will add 1x to both sides

1x -1/2x -2 = 1x -x -3 (1x and x mean the same)

1/2x -2 = -3

Now we will add 2 to both sides, still trying to isolate x

1/2x -2 +2 = -3 +2

1/2x = -1

Now we divide both sides by 1/2 to solve for x. Remember when you divide a fraction you flip it and multiply.

1/2 * 2/1 x = -1 * 2/1

x = -2

Now we can solve for y by substituting our x value into line 1.

y .= -(-2) -3

y = -1

Now we check our work by substituting our x and y values into line 1

-1 = -(-2) -3

-1 = -1

Problem solved!
