Zika is a mild virus but can cause birth defects or miscarriages if a pregnant woman contracts it and has led to a crisis in South America. In 2016, cases of the Zika virus were reported in North America. To prevent its spread, a county in South Carolina sprayed pesticides from a plane to kill the mosquitoes carrying Zika without notifying bee farmers beforehand. Afterwards, massive bee deaths were reported. It was described that bee farms looked like cemeteries as millions of bees died overnight.
