Victor has been seeing a patient for about six weeks now. She’s been coming every week. Rosalind is currently recovering from a very messy divorce, and Victor has been providing some healing, he believes, by listening to Rosalind as she pours out her emotional pain as he massages her. He finds that he is drawn to Rosalind and finds her extremely attractive. He feels a great deal of sympathy for her and is drawn to her physically, intellectually, and emotionally. The last time she was in, they talked in the office for about fifteen minutes, after the massage, and he realized that she is also attracted to him. Victor would like to ask Rosalind out, but he knows that might be a breach of ethics. Therefore, he decides to call her and ask her out to dinner. If she says yes, he intends to tell her that he would like to discontinue their formal, therapeutic relationship and take up a romantic relationship. He plans to refer her to one of his colleagues for medical massage. Is Victor committing a breach of ethics, even if he discontinues the therapeutic relationship once they begin to date? Why or why not? What may be dangerous about this situation? For Rosalind? For Victor? Can something good come out of Victor’s decision? Why or why notIf Victor and Rosalind begin dating and it ends badly, and then Rosalind falls into a major depression for which she needs medication, is Victor legally responsible? Ethically responsible? Why or why not?
