How did the Articles of
Confederation organize the
first national government?

Under the Articles of Confederation, there was only one branch of government at the federal level, the legislature, known as Congress; the executive and judicial branches were absent. Congress feared that in the future, it would be able to control the states in a way that would be undesirable. Therefore, they made sure that Congress was weak and that its powers were limited in order to achieve its goals.
