Let the number of children be c and the number of adults be a.

This means that 2c+5.8a=1124 and a+c=296.

Multiplying both sides of the second equation yields 2a+2c=592.

Subtracting this from the first equation gives 3.8a=532, so a=140.

This means that 140+c=296, and thus c=156.

Therefore, 140 adults and 156 children were admitted.
