Animal Diversity Lab Activity:

For this lab activity, you will create a
phylogenetic tree with 20 Sponge Bob
Characters and 35 different “shared
derived characteristics” for members of
the Animal Kingdom. Note if there are
any instances of convergent evolution in
these characteristics.

The lab must follow these keys:
-The tree is not so small and squished that I can’t read the names or see the characters.
-All 20 Sponge Bob characters are included
-All 35 traits/characteristics are used. Any instances of convergence are listed.
-All traits/characteristics are in the correct place and clearly describe the intended character.

Sponge Bob Characters:
• Sponge Bob Square Pants
• Squidward Tentacles
• Patrick Star
• Sandy Cheeks
• Mr. Krabs
• Pearl Krabs
• Gary
• Shark with fake arms
• Sheldon J. Plankton
• Mrs. Puff
• Karen
• Man-Ray
• Larry the Lifeguard
• Mermaid Main & Barnacle Boy
• Jellyfish Fields
• Whelks
• Bullworm
• Nematodes
• Potty the Parrot
• Madam Hagfish

• Bilateral Symmetry
• Spiny Skin
• Segmented Worms (Annelids)
• Eutherian
• True Coelom
• Jaws
• Round bodies(Pseudo-coelom)
• Radial Symmetry

Final answer:

A phylogenetic tree or cladogram is a visualization of the evolutionary history among organisms based on shared characteristics. In this lab activity, you will create a phylogenetic tree with 20 SpongeBob characters and 35 shared derived characteristics of the Animal Kingdom, noting any instances of convergence. Accuracy and clarity are important in constructing the tree.

Step-by-step explanation:

A phylogenetic tree or cladogram is a visual representation of the evolutionary history among a group of organisms based on shared characteristics. In this lab activity, you will create a phylogenetic tree with 20 SpongeBob characters and 35 shared derived characteristics of the Animal Kingdom. A shared derived characteristic is a trait that derived at some point in the evolutionary history and is found only in some of the organisms in the tree. Instances of convergence, which is when unrelated organisms independently evolve similar traits, should also be noted.

Here is an example of how the lab can be structured:

  1. Create a phylogenetic tree with all 20 SpongeBob characters and place them in the correct positions according to their shared derived characteristics.
  2. Use all 35 traits/characteristics and clearly describe which character they represent.
  3. Note any instances of convergence, where different characters show similar traits.
  4. Make sure the tree is legible, and all names and characters are visible.

Remember, accuracy and clarity are essential in constructing the phylogenetic tree.
