Served as safety and shelter for soldiers. Trenches kept soldiers from getting shot (not completely)

Answer: To protect soldiers from gunfire and artillery.

Explanation: because the trenches were basically holes in the ground but with extra steps, they served as a defense so soldiers wouldn't have to fight in open fields and cause mass casualties.
