With x being -2, we will multiply -2 x -2 = 4. the exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself. If the exponent was 5, we would multiply 2 by itself 5 times to get 10. Since we got 4 for our answer, we will multiply that by since it was an exponent and we multiply it. 4 x 5 = 20. Since we know that we multiply numbers next to variables, we will multiply 3y or 3(10). 3 x 10 = 30. Add this to 20 to get your answer. 20 + 30 = 50.
