The Monroe Doctrine was created in 1823. American foreign policy proclaimed the western hemisphere as a reserve for the Americas and off-limits to European colonization. Latin America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean are under U.S. influence.

Any European attempt to colonize the American sphere of influence would be perceived as hostile and would require U.S. involvement. The doctrine also claimed that the US would acknowledge European colonies and not intervene in European affairs. This theory was a watershed in U.S. foreign policy.
