f(x = x^2 + 8x - 2 Completing the square on x^2 + 8x:-

= (x + 4)^2 - 16 - 2

= (x + 4)^2 - 18

- which is the vertex form of f(x)

The vertex of

(x - h)^2 + k is at (h, k)

So the vertex of f(x) is at (-4, -18)
