PLZ HELP ME

Sally learned that she could make an electromagnet by wrapping wire that has an electrical current running through it around a steel nail. The number of paper clips the electromagnet can pick up can be increased by increasing the number of coils of wire around the nail. Sally hypothesized that for each 8 coils, she would be able to pick up one additional paper clip.

When she ran the experiment, Sally observed and recorded the following data:Which

statement about Sally’s experiment is correct?

A.The experimental data supports Sally’s hypothesis.

B.Every time Sally added 2 coils to the nail, the total number of paper clips lifted increased by 8.

C.Every time Sally added 8 coils to the nail, the total number of paper clips lifted doubled.

D.The experimental data does not support Sally’s hypothesis.

Answer:

  • D. The experimental data does not support Sally’s hypothesis.

Explanation:

Sally's hypothesis can be shown as:

  • 8c = 1p, where c- coil, p- paper clip

From the data in the table we can see that:

  • 8c = 2p ⇒ 4c = 1p
  • 16c = 4p ⇒ 4c = 1p
  • 24c = 6p ⇒ 4c = 1p

As we see there is a difference, Sally can pick up one paper clip for each 4 coils.

Correct answer choice is D.
