The painting above is called The Raft of the Medusa, and it was painted by Theodore Gericault in 1819.

You can see in the painting that the people are trying to help the man waving the cloth by lifting him up so that the other ship may see them and finally save them. The contrast is obvious here - the people on the ship are pale and dressed in white, whereas the man with the cloth is quite tanned. Also, one of the most commonly used features in art is the triangle - you can see that the people have formed almost a perfect triangle so as to lift the man up. Movement can be seen in the cloth itself - it is fluttering in the wind, and all that creates this illusion that the whole painting is sort of moving.
