In the Lord of the Rings, to make Elijah Wood (Frodo) look smaller, they made him stand/sit in a way where he is farther away, but you can't tell he's farther away because it is an illusion.

Answer: In films such as mad max fury road it is very action packed and has many explosions. I believe some of them may be practical but I believe that they used ChromaKey for some of the scenes. That means they used things like green screens along with the use of practical effects.
