You score an 83 on the first of two exams. Write and solve an

equation to find the score x that you need on the second exam to
have a mean score of 85.

Answer: The mean is the same as the average. In order to find the mean, or average score of the two tests, you need to take the sum of the two tests, and then divide by the number of tests, which is two.

We don't know the score of the second exam. Let it = x

Then we have the following equation:

(88 + x)/2 = 93

88 + x = 2 * 93

88 + x = 186

x = 186 - 88 = 98

You need to score a 98 on the second test
