How would you define making a difference in teaching?

Making sure students actually learn the content you're teaching. I've seen too many kids who don't actually learn anything from school, and once they're outside of school, they're completely clueless on what to do. I also think making a difference in those student's lives is also a good difference, as many teachers seem to be there for the paycheck, not the actual learning.

To make a difference, teachers must be willing and able to create a conducive, social environment for learning and students have to be open to the experience of learning in this environment. The question is, of course, how to get this dance started in the first place and then how to keep it going.
