There are 48 students in a school play. The ratio of boys to girls is 5 : 7. How many more girls than boys are in the play?

There are 28 girls. 7/12 are girls so take that percentage and multiply it by 48

Ratios are easier to read as fractions (at least to me), so 5:7 would be 5/7. When you multiply both the top and the bottom by 4, you get 20/28, meaning that there are 20 boys and 28 girls. 28-20=8, so there are 8 more girls than boys.
