Answer:

The narrator, George Orwell, was a policeman in Burman during the time British imperialism was still prominent. Although he works as a policeman for the British empire, he is secretly against imperialism and all for the Burmese. However, as the Burmese do not know his true thoughts, he is hated by many.

As it comes time to kill the elephant, Orwell doesn’t wish to kill the elephant as it goes against his morals, however, he feels pressured by the Burmese people and doesn’t want to disappoint them.
