After Dan makes a basket, Josephine claims she can find the amount of time the ball was in the air (from the time it leave's Dan's hand to the time it enters the basket),

Josephine says she can do this by using Dan's equation (1) = -1649 +18 + 8) and setting the equation equal to zero. Dan doesn't think Josephine's thinking is correct.

The function is to blurry to see but you would not set the height function equal to zero. Instead h should be set to the height of the basket. The time elapsed would be the second time the ball was at the height of the basket. If I guess what the function is as

-16t^2+18t+8=10

-16t^2+18t-2=0

-16t^2+16t+2t-2=0

-16t(t-1)+2(t-1)=0

(-16t+2)(t-1)=0

So the ball is at 10ft at 0.125s and 1s. So it enters the hoop after 1 second. Of course this is dependent on if I guessed at the correct equation from the picture.
