If you were to measure a straight line from New York to Hong Kong it would measure 12.6 cm. If the scale of the map says that 3000 miles are 3.2 cm, what is the distance between New York and Hong Kong in miles?

WE can solve it by ratio and proportions

Let the distance be x

\\ \sf\longmapsto (x)/(12.6)=(3000)/(3.2)

\\ \sf\longmapsto 3.2x=3000(12.6)

\\ \sf\longmapsto 3.2x=37800

\\ \sf\longmapsto x=(37800)/(3.2)

\\ \sf\longmapsto x=11812.5mi

Answer:

  • 11812.5 miles

Explanation:

Given:

  • 3000 miles → 3.2 cm
  • x miles → 12.6 cm

Solve for x by cross-product:

  • 3.2x = 3000*12.6
  • x = 37800/3.2
  • x = 11812.5 miles
