Bases:

  • have a pH greater than 7
  • more bitter
  • slippery to touch
  • usually have the chemical compound OH at the end (hydroxide)
  • Example: soap, ammonia

Acids:

  • have a pH less than 7
  • more sour
  • reacts with many metal
  • can dissolve bones
  • Example: hydrochloric acid, lemons

When dissolved in water, bases give off OH- ions where acids give off H+ ions.
