Explanation:

For a cube of side length L, the volume is:

V = L^3

Then if each small cube is a centimetre cube, the volume of each small cube is:

V = (1cm)^3 = 1cm^3

Now we need to count the number of small cubes in the figure.

In the front, we can see that there are 8 cubes, and we can assume that there are another 8 cubes in the back.

Then there are a total of 16 cubes.

And each cube has a volume of 1 cm^3, then the volume of the figure is 16 times that, or:

volume = 16*(1 cm^3) = 16 cm^3
