What are the pros and cons of dams used to control the flow of a river?

One of the benefits is that we can control where the water flows which allows us to make more structures around the world. However, when we make dams, the water cannot create natural levees and that is bad because natural levees are supposed to break so that it can spread soil from upriver, which protects the land around it. One example of this is the Mississippi river, which does not make natural levees that would protect the mouth of the river or the Gulf of Mexico. That means that the coast would be more subject to damage by hurricanes.
