8^2+b^2=17^2

64+b^2=289

b^2=225

b=15

The area is comprised of two triangle (which make one rectangle) and one rectangle (1 unit by 15).

area= bh(of a triangle) + bh(of the middle rectangle

area=8(15)+1(15)

area=135
