Question:

10 of the students in Josiah's grade like to eat meatloaf. 11 students like to eat spaghetti, and 6 students like to eat both meatloaf and spaghetti. How many students like to eat meatloaf but not spaghetti?

Answer:

Students eating meatloaf. = A

students eating sphegetti = B

A∩ B students like both

Total students =11+6=17

⟼n(A∪B)=n(A)+n(B)−n(A∩B)

⟼17=n(A)+10−6

⟼n(A)=17−4

⟼n(A)=13

⟼A= 13−6

=7

  • A=Students eating meatloaf.
  • B =students eating sphegetti .
  • A
    \capB students like both

Total stud=11+6=17

\\ \sf\longmapsto n(A\cup B)=n(A)+n(B)-n(A\cap B)

\\ \sf\longmapsto 17=n(A)+10-6

\\ \sf\longmapsto n(A)=17-4

\\ \sf\longmapsto n(A)=13

  • Cancel A intersection b

\\ \sf\longmapsto A=13-6=7
